Accident Claims Solicitors in Huddersfield, Yorkshire
Accidents happen every day. Sadly, some accidents can result in an injury which has a significant impact on your everyday life. As well as the distress and pain caused by the accident itself, your quality of life can be seriously affected.
If you are unable to work as a result of your injuries, you may find yourself facing financial difficulties due to the potential loss of earnings, whilst being faced with rehabilitation and medical costs which can become quite costly. Any injury which restricts your day to day life can also impact close friends and family if, for example, you need to rethink future plans, or you need support to do everyday activities.
If you have suffered an injury as a result of an accident which was not your fault, it can be very frustrating as you know that your injury, and the impact on your life, was caused by someone else’s carelessness. In this situation, it seems only fair that you should receive appropriate financial compensation.

How long do I have to make a claim?
In general, in the UK, you have to start a personal injury claim within three years from the date of the accident. There are a number of exceptions to this general rule, therefore if you wish to make a claim as a result of an accident, you should speak to one of our personal injury specialists as soon as possible. We can then discuss with you any exceptions which may apply to your particular situation.
What can I claim for?
As every situation is different, the amount of compensation you could receive will vary a lot depending on the circumstances of your accident. As a general rule, the more serious your injuries are and the greater your injuries have impacted your day-to-day life, then the more compensation you could be entitled to.
As the claims process can be quite complicated, it is advisable to engage a specialist to provide professional advice and fight your claim for you. Normally, for personal injury, two types of compensation are sought:
General damages – Compensation for the pain, suffering, and loss of amenity you suffered due to the injuries caused by your accident. Essentially, this is compensation for the impact of the accident on your physical and psychological health, as well as the impact on your everyday life. The court will decide on the sum to be paid.
Special damages – Compensation for financial losses related to your accident. This will vary depending on your injuries and personal circumstance, but typical examples include:
- loss of earnings and pension as a result of a serious injury
- travel to medical appointments
- equipment and alterations to vehicles and housing as a result of your injuries
- the purchase of prosthetic limbs
- ongoing nursing and care
- private health care and surgery
- domestic services, including DIY, window cleaning, decoration and maintenance
We understand that this can seem quite overwhelming, but at Grieves Solicitors, we have the skills and experience to support you every step of the way and make sure you obtain the maximum compensation possible. To find out how much you could be eligible to claim, use our compensation calculator.
