Suffering a serious injury can turn your world upside down. It can impact close family and friends, particularly if you must rethink future plans or if your injuries mean you need support with everyday activities.
The financial burden of a serious injury can be particularly significant. Along with the potential loss of earnings from being able to work, the cost of rehabilitation and medical expenses can quickly add up.

How long do I have to make a claim?
In general, in the UK, you have to start a personal injury claim within three years from the date of the accident. There are however a number of exceptions to this general rule, therefore if you believe you may have a claim, you should obtain legal advice from a personal injury specialist as soon as possible. At Grieves Solicitors, we have the expertise to help you understand any exceptions which may apply to your personal set of circumstances, and we can provide advice on your next steps.
What could I claim for?
Serious injuries cover a wide range of situations and every case is different. As a general rule, the more serious your injuries and the greater the impact your injuries have on your everyday life, the more compensation you will require to cover the financial cost of your injury.
Serious injury claims usually involve making a claim for two different types of compensation:
General damages – Compensation for the pain, suffering and loss of amenity you have suffered as a result of your accident related injuries. Essentially this is compensation for the impact of the accident on your physical and psychological health, as well as the impact on your everyday life. The sum to be paid will be decided by the court.
Special damages – Compensation for financial losses related to your accident. Examples include:
- loss of earnings and pension as a result of a serious injury
- travel to medical appointments
- equipment and alterations to vehicles and housing
- the purchase of prosthetic limbs
- ongoing nursing and care
- private health care and surgery
- domestic services, including DIY, window cleaning, decoration and maintenance.
Determining what you should claim compensation for and how much can seem a bit overwhelming. At Grieves Solicitors we have the expertise and experience to help you navigate your way through the claims process, to make sure you obtain the maximum compensation possible.
