IMPROVEMENTS TO BIKE ACCIDENT SAFETY PROPOSED
The number of cyclists claiming compensation following a road accident could be set to fall significantly if the installation of lorry sensors is made mandatory in the UK, it has been suggested. Sir Alan Beith, member of parliament for Berwick upon Tweed, recently proposed in the House of Commons that technology should be adopted by haulage firms that can tell drivers if a cyclist is behind their blind spot
.He called for the sensors to be fitted as part of his Road Safety Bill after being contacted by the family of Eilidh Cairns, who was killed by a lorry while on her bike in London.
>"It is a problem which is particularly acute in city traffic, especially at junctions" he explained. "It is a problem that is likely to increase as cycling becomes ever more popular as a means of getting to work in urban areas, and for leisure, and as lorries get bigger"
Sir Beith went on to state fellow MPs should take advantage of "the opportunity to call for practical measures to save lives".
Commenting on the news, Helen Grieves, founder and principal at Grieves Solicitors, said: "It is imperative the government does all it can to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on Britain’s roads and we believe the lorry sensors can play their part.>"From working closely with victims of road accidents and their families, we have seen how much damage can be done when someone fails to check their blind spot or fails to concentrate while driving."That’s why we at Grieves work so hard to recover the compensation victims deserve. While compensation can’t right the wrongs of an accident, it can significantly improve the quality of life of sufferers and their loved ones and provide much-needed funding for essentials such as medical care, rehabilitation and transport" Grieves Solicitors is a law firm that specialises exclusively in recovering personal injury compensation for accident victims.
